3 Wheel All Terrain Pushchair
A pushchair that is all-terrain with excellent maneuverability will suit you whether you're seeking a stroller for nature walks or taking a stroll along the high streets. These types of models are typically equipped with large wheels and suspension systems that provide a smooth ride on bumpy terrain.
Many are suitable for babies and include seats that can be positioned on a flat surface or a baby carrycot. These vehicles also have tyres that do not flatten, and are usually made of foam.
Suspension
A truly all-terrain pushchair will have good suspension which is designed to be extra smooth on rough terrain and help your child to be comfortable and calm. The wheels are usually big and puncture-proof to prevent injuries from sharp rocks or sharp sticks.
The larger tyres can allow you to tackle more challenging terrain with ease, with some all-terrain pushchairs even offering additional tyres that can be switched between to suit different conditions. Some all-terrain strollers have a swivel wheel that can be locked to provide stability, or left unlocked to permit greater maneuverability.
Certain all-terrain strollers have a brake handbrake lockable that is more accessible by hand. This is more convenient than a traditional pedal on the handlebars. This is a fantastic feature to have if you want to take on difficult terrain, particularly with children in the seat and lots of shopping bags tucked away underneath!
If you don't want go quite as extreme as an all-terrain pushchair, there are many strollers available that have very good - but not perfect - off-road capability, with excellent suspension and large wheels. These are often a bit more affordable than the more expensive full-on all terrain buggy options, and will still be perfectly suitable for excursions to the park with the dog or short walks around the countryside.
Many of these strollers are suitable for infants, with either a carrycot or car seat that is designed for newborns. Be aware that the seats will not be able to lie flat when you push over bumps or dips. As per EU regulations, they need to meet minimum standards of reclined angles of approximately 150deg. Graco has gotten around this issue with its new 'comfitech in-seat suspension' that lets the seat recline at a flatter angle for more comfort. This is available on the Lila XP all-terrain pushchair which can be used in conjunction with a compatible Graco infant car seat to create a 3 in one travel system.
Seat
There is a variety of 3-wheeled all-terrain pushchairs that offer an excellent off-road capabilities. They are ideal if you live in the countryside or walk frequently on uneven, rough terrain. They are typically more durable and sturdy than a regular pushchair, and come with features such as large puncture-proof wheels to handle the most difficult of surfaces. They tend to be quite large and may be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces or in the aisles of shops.
The seat on an all-terrain buggy can either be facing the world or towards the parent and expands with your child from newborn to toddler (it's suitable for children as young as 6 months). It's outfitted with foam-filled "never flat' tyres to ensure smooth rides with dual frame suspension, as well as luxurious padding in the seat unit that offers excellent postural support and comfort. It features a recline feature, an enormous hood that can be extended with integrated venting, as well as a pocket for a smartphone.
The brand new Out 'n' About Nipper V5 is another excellent choice. It's an all-terrain stroller that's a trailblazer. It comes with great suspension and air-filled tyres so it's suitable to jog when your child is of the right age. It also features the ability to lock the front 360 swivel wheel to allow for maneuverability, and a one-handed fold that's super easy and quick. It's suitable from birth and can be paired with an UPPAbaby carrycot, or infant car seat adapters (sold separately).
There are a number of all-terrain strollers that do not have a reversible seat. However, the Oyster 3, Venicci Tanum and egg 2, which have this option, have a great weight limit as well as a robust off-road ability. There are a variety of pushchairs classified as all-rounders, such as the iCandy Pear and Bugaboo Cameleon, which cope very well with rough terrain at the park or National Trust places but don't offer the off-road performance of true all-terrain pushchairs.
There are also crossover models that offer an excellent compromise between extreme off road and high street. They have large wheels, great suspension, and are designed in a pushchair-style, with an option for reversible seating and a carrycot. Brands like iCandy, Easywalker and Bugaboo have come up with some fantastic models to look at.
Wheels
If you live in a rural area or regularly take your baby for walks on rough terrain an all-terrain pushchair is essential. These models typically have larger back wheels than standard pushchairs, which makes them more adept in handling rough off-road terrains and ensuring an easy ride for your child. Some also have a sturdy suspension and puncture-proof versions to ensure they're safe for use on woodland, grass or trails or gravel tracks, as well as market town cobbles.
Certain all-terrain strollers come with a lockable wheel at the front which provides extra stability when walking on rough terrain or over high kerbs. Some models have swivel wheels at the front that allow you to move the buggy more easily if you want to change direction or turn corners.
All-terrain pushchairs come with air-filled tyres which offer excellent shock absorption and are great for tackling rough ground but they're more prone to punctures than the solid EVA tyres found on lightweight city strollers so it's worth buying a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump to go with your pushchair. Certain all-terrain models come with foam tyres which are less prone to punctures, but aren't as good at absorbing shock and may feel harder to push than air-filled tyres.
The brand new Bugaboo Fox 5 is a good example of a pushchair that comes with air and foam-filled tyres, a great suspension system and large wheels that are puncture-proof at the rear. They are perfect for off-road or jogging use (once your child is old enough). The model can be used even from birth with a carrycot as well as a lying-flat chair.
Another option is the iCandy Peach All-Terrain, which has large tyres and has only a single steering wheel in the front. It's not as flexible as other all-terrain strollers on this list, but it can manage hilly terrain and features a large, one-hand fold that is ideal for long walks in the countryside, or long trips. It's also suitable for infants and has a spacious canopy that extends with an adjustable handlebar and a hugely-sized basket.
Storage
For parents that would like to take their little one off-road but don't necessarily fancy tackling Ben Nevis, there are some top all-terrain pushchairs that give you the best of both worlds. Look for one that has all-terrain capabilities, sturdy suspension, and large puncture-proof wheels, but is constructed in a traditional pushchair style with reversible seating and full carrycot options.
The UPPAbaby's bestselling Ridge all terrain pushchair is a great example. It comes with a fantastic suspension and a single-hand fold and a spacious basket that can hold up to 10 kg. However, it also has many parent-friendly features, including an adjustable handlebar and a hand-operated break on the right. A hood that can be removed and cleaned with cool soapy water is another helpful feature that can keep mildew and mould from forming.
If you intend to use your all-terrain stroller off the road, opt for air-filled tires instead of rubber grips. They'll provide a more comfortable ride on rough ground and be easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces. If you plan to use your all-terrain stroller for occasional jogging, make sure the front wheel can swivel or has a quick release feature to lock it in place for greater stability.
To ensure that the fabric is in pristine condition, it's important to make sure they can be washed by a machine. If not, a spot cleaning with warm soapy water and some warm water should be sufficient. 3 wheeled pushchair can be dried thoroughly outside to avoid mould or mildew.
The majority of our 3 wheel pushchairs are suitable from birth. Choose models that have a fully lie-flat seat and a reversible backrest to allow you to use it from birth right up until your child is around three years old. If you want to travel as a family of three, a lot are compatible with car seats due to the built-in adaptors. If you'd like to leave the car at home, there are some all-terrain pushchairs with fixed front wheels that are ideal for casual strolling or jogging light like the Delta Special Needs all-terrain jogger from Delichon which is available in a variety of frame and canvas sizes to suit children and adults.
